March 3-9: Check Your Vehicle's Recall Status and Get Free Repairs

WASHINGTON, March 3, 2025 /PRNewswire/ --The National Safety Council encourages every vehicle driver to check their vehicle's recall status during the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's Vehicle Safety Recalls Week March 3-9, a nationwide initiative to protect drivers and passengers from preventable safety issues.

Nearly 57 million vehicles – 1 in 5 on American roads today – have unrepaired safety recalls. These recalls address critical safety issues affecting essential vehicle systems like airbags, steering and brakes. The NSC Check to Protect campaign makes it easy for drivers to protect themselves and others by checking their vehicle's recall status. Safety experts recommend checking for recalls during regular service visits or at least quarterly, as new recalls can be issued at any time.

"Road safety is a top priority for all road users and with millions of vehicles being used every day with unrepaired safety recalls, it's important for drivers to make sure their vehicles are safe," said Lonny Haschel, senior program manager with the Mobility Safety Impact Program at NSC. "NSC encourages every driver to check their vehicle for an open recall and get it repaired for free as soon as possible. All roadway users are safer when vehicle safety recalls are repaired."

Drivers can easily check their vehicle's recall status at CheckToProtect.org by entering their license plate number, Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), or uploading a photo of either. If a recall is found, repairs can be completed for FREE at any authorized dealer, regardless of where the vehicle was purchased. Any information entered is used solely to identify open recalls.
