Via wins patent infringement case against RideCo
Ruling reinforces the importance of Via's Virtual Bus Stop patents for the efficient operation of microtransit systems at scale
WACO, Texas, Jan. 31, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- On January 30th, 2025, Via won a unanimous jury verdict in its patent infringement suit against RideCo in federal district court in the Western District of Texas. The jury found that RideCo infringed Via's three Virtual Bus Stop patents (U.S. Patent Nos. 9,562,785, 9,816,824, and 10,197,411) and ordered RideCo to pay damages to Via. RideCo withdrew its claims that Via's patents were invalid, resulting in a judgment as a matter of law in Via's favor on the issue of validity. Via also prevailed against RideCo's counterclaims: the jury found that Via did not infringe either of RideCo's two patents.
Since 2012, Via has been reinventing public transit by developing proprietary and innovative on-demand microtransit technology. Via's technology has helped transform public transportation from a rigid system of fixed routes and schedules into a dynamic network that allows many more riders to access jobs, schools, and healthcare appointments without the expense of a private car.
"Via's technology is the most sophisticated in the industry, and has largely defined the TransitTech category," said Erin Abrams, Chief Legal Officer at Via. "We are gratified that the jury recognized Via as the inventor of Virtual Bus Stop technology and acknowledged the value of our intellectual property. We are also grateful the jury rejected all of RideCo's counterclaims. We look forward to continuing to deploy our technology to advance more efficient, equitable transportation in communities around the world."
