"Portfolio analysis tools continue to be an essential resource for advisors, especially as they look to streamline investment management and focus on financial planning," says Sam Fritsch, research manager at CI. "We conducted this research to identify the current leaders and best practices for these high-value tools. We found that the top tools streamline client portfolio management while providing sophisticated analysis capabilities, helping advisors see how different holdings and allocations impact portfolios."

Key findings from the research include:

  • BlackRock and J.P. Morgan lead the industry, with the firms earning the report's only two Excellent ratings for comprehensive portfolio analysis tools that combine robust functionality with strong user experience. Blackrock's 360 Evaluator tool allows for easy sharing with clients and encourages advisors to use other integrated tools, including an expected return analyzer, to further optimize the portfolio. J.P. Morgan's Portfolio Analysis tool stands out for its flexibility throughout the input process and ability to generate highly customizable client reports.

  • Standout portfolio analysis tools incorporate varied input options to support broad advisor preferences, ranging from manual search to client portfolio import. CI's survey found that advisors put a particular premium on the ability to upload their own data and fund search tools with predictive capabilities.

  • The report recommends that firms allow advisors to add investment objectives in order to generate better recommendations, something that currently only J.P Morgan offers in its tool. As advisors highly value this capability, according to CI's survey, asset management firms looking to close a competitive gap in their offerings would do well to incorporate investment objectives going forward.

  • There remains significant variation in data visualization capabilities, with some firms still providing limited interactive charts and graphics. In a CI survey, 81% of advisors said data visualizations are "very" or "extremely" important. J.P. Morgan, Franklin Templeton and Vanguard all stand out for a range of data visualizations.

  • The ability to save and customize client-facing reports emerge as key differentiators, allowing advisors to update reports based on changing goals, market conditions and client needs.

"This report shows that trailing tools can become leading tools with a few quality-of-life changes, more data visualization options, and investment objective considerations," adds Fritsch. "Easy-to-use tools help advisors manage their practices and better meet client needs as the market evolves."

The full report examines the portfolio construction tools from nine leading asset management firms:

  • American Funds
  • Blackrock
  • DFA
  • Fidelity
  • Franklin Templeton
  • J.P. Morgan
  • John Hancock
  • PIMCO
