BIRMINGHAM, Ala., Feb. 26, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- The Addiction Prevention Coalition (APC) and DisposeRx are proud to announce a new initiative in Jefferson County to expand opioid education and in-home medication disposal solutions, funded through a new grant opportunity. This initiative aims to combat the opioid crisis by raising awareness, promoting safe medication disposal practices, and reducing the risks associated with unused prescription drugs.

DisposeRx, Inc. is dedicated to decreasing the risks of drug diversion, overdoses, suicides, accidental poisonings and antibiotic resistance by facilitating medication safety behavior change and eradicating the misuse of leftover medications. DisposeRx’s market-leading, patented medication disposal packets and education programs are currently available at 60% of retail pharmacies, 90% of wholesale distributors, and through health plans and provider organizations across the U.S. The company has donated more than 750,000 packets to approximately 450 community non-profits since 2018. According to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health, the majority of individuals aged 12 and older who misuse prescription pain relievers obtain them from friends or family members.

As part of this partnership, APC and DisposeRx will distribute DisposeRx in-home drug disposal packets through mail and community events while also providing evidence-based educational resources to individuals, families, and communities. This initiative aligns with national efforts to address opioid misuse and supports both organizations' broader mission of creating safer, healthier communities by eradicating the misuse of unused prescription medications.

"Addiction Prevention Coalition is committed to providing individuals and families with the knowledge and resources they need to make informed decisions about prescription medications," said Nichole Dawsey, Executive Director of APC. "Through this partnership with DisposeRx, we are enhancing access to safe disposal methods, ultimately preventing opioid misuse before it begins."

DisposeRx, a leading provider of in-home drug disposal solutions, offers a simple and affordable way for individuals to safely dispose of leftover medications. When mixed with water, DisposeRx's patented, non-toxic formula renders prescription drugs unusable, preventing misuse and reducing environmental contamination.

"Proper disposal of unused medications is a crucial step in preventing opioid misuse and accidental overdoses," said William Simpson, CEO of DisposeRx. "We are honored to collaborate with APC in this important initiative, ensuring communities have access to both education and the tools they need to safeguard their households."

The grant opportunity will allow APC and DisposeRx to reach at-risk populations, including families, seniors, and individuals in recovery, ensuring they have the tools to safely dispose of medications and prevent opioid misuse.
