Corning Incorporated GLW has extended its portfolio of durable cover materials with the launch of Corning Gorilla Glass Ceramic, bringing an advanced protective layer for the safety of mobile devices. This innovative transparent material significantly improves drop performance on rough surfaces compared to competitive aluminosilicate glasses, surviving 10 repeated drops from one meter on surfaces replicating asphalt in lab testing.  The Corning Gorilla Glass Ceramic has added a new dimension to the toughness quotient of mobile devices, with the existing aluminosilicate glass coverings failing miserably in similar lab tests. The product is slated to hit the markets soon and is likely to be an instant hit for OEMs looking for durability for mobile devices to cater to evolving customer needs. This, in turn, is likely to generate incremental revenues for Corning and propel the stock.GLW Focusing on Cover Materials, Glass SubstrateOver the years, Corning has been focusing on developing state-of-the-art cover materials, which are deployed on more than 8 billion devices. Samsung recently opted to deploy Corning Gorilla Armor 2 cover material for its latest Galaxy S25 Ultra devices. It is the most scratch-resistant and optically advanced Gorilla Glass yet. The solution brings an enhanced visual experience with unparalleled durability to Samsung’s newest flagship smartphone.Corning is also a leading innovator in the glass substrate industry. The company has been developing environment-friendly formulations that impart superior picture quality. Corning’s generation 10 substrates use the proprietary EAGLE XG formulation, which serves both these purposes. Corning was the first glass substrate developer with generation 10 capability. A higher-generation substrate is a larger-sized substrate, which enables panel makers to reduce manufacturing costs since more panels can be built from each substrate. Corning’s capability positions it to better serve the secular increase in demand for LCD panels. The company’s fusion technology reduces glass thickness, enabling panel manufacturers to do away with thinning costs that are usually necessary for making slimmer, lighter and more power-efficient consumer devices.Fiber Densification: GLW’s Key Growth DriverCorning is also benefiting from increased fiber densification. Multiple factors are likely to drive Corning’s fiber optic solutions business over the next several years, primarily the increasing use of mobile devices that require efficient data transfer and efficient networking systems. Supporting this trend is the proliferation of clouds, which is resulting in increased storage and even computing on a virtual plane. Since both consumers and enterprises are using the network more, there is tremendous demand for quality networking. Also, data consumption patterns are changing. For instance, there is a growing propensity to consume video content, thus creating the need for faster data transfer. As optical networks are more efficient and most of the existing networks are copper-based, the demand for optical solutions is particularly strong. Corning has several products focused on the data center with a portfolio consisting of optical fiber, hardware, cable and connectors that help it create optical solutions to meet evolving customer needs. The stock has gained 40.5% over the past year compared with the industry’s growth of 33.3%.Image Source: Zacks Investment ResearchZacks Rank & Key PicksCorning currently carries a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold).
