Nokia NOK has been chosen by Deutsches Forschungsnetz e.V. (“DFN”), Germany’s National Research and Education Network, to modernize and expand the latter’s IP core network across the country. With this upgrade, DFN is equipped with Nokia’s advanced IP routing solution, delivering greater bandwidth, increased capacity and up to 75% reduction in power consumption — paving the way for a more sustainable and efficient future in scientific research.Nokia Corporation Price and Consensus Nokia Corporation price-consensus-chart | Nokia Corporation QuoteHow Nokia is Helping DFN Build a Green IP NetworkDFN operates one of the largest non-commercial research and education networks globally, connecting around 850 institutions across Germany with a 10,250-kilometer optical fiber backbone and a multi-terabit core network spanning 65 sites. This robust infrastructure is essential for high-throughput applications. It enables seamless access to critical resources, such as supercomputers and large-scale data repositories, especially for research projects involving massive data transfers and international collaboration. As part of the initiative, DFN replaced legacy equipment from a previous vendor with Nokia’s state-of-the-art 7750 Service Routers powered by its proprietary FP5 routing silicon. This deployment extends to 10 strategic locations throughout Germany, boosting DFN’s network capabilities from 100G interfaces to 400G and offering a clear path to scale up to 800G as data demands continue to rise. With Nokia’s support, all of DFN’s existing applications were smoothly migrated to the new network infrastructure, and the deployment was accompanied by a comprehensive suite of professional services, technical consulting and training.Nokia highlighted that DFN is a cornerstone of Germany’s scientific ecosystem, connecting universities and research institutions nationwide. This collaboration demonstrates the strength of Nokia’s IP routing technology in delivering a future-ready, energy-efficient and scalable network that supports the dynamic needs of the research community.Key Drivers Behind Nokia’s Strong PerformanceNokia is witnessing healthy momentum in its focus areas of software and enterprise, which augurs well for the licensing business. It is poised to benefit from copper and fiber deployments of passive optical networking. It is the only global supplier that is offering O-RAN with commercial 5G Cloud-RAN networks. Nokia announced an expansion of its IP routing business into the data center market and highlighted that Apple was deploying its technology at its data centers. Nokia intends to accelerate strategy execution, sharpen customer focus and reduce long-term costs. At the same time, it is focused on building a strong, scalable software business and expanding it to structurally attractive enterprise adjacencies. Nokia’s C-Band portfolio supports 5G standalone and non-standalone networks, cloud-based implementations and Open RAN products.Nokia is also on track to achieve sustainable, profitable growth and technology leadership. It aims to accelerate its product roadmaps and cost competitiveness through additional 5G investments. It has been developing its 5G portfolio, strengthening AirScale and advancing the capabilities of its ReefShark chipset. Nokia’s extensive portfolio consists of around 20,000 patents, among which 7,000 are essential for 5G.Nokia is well-positioned for the ongoing technology cycle, given the strength of its end-to-end portfolio. The company’s deal win rate is encouraging, with notable successes in the key 5G markets of the United States and China. Its installed base of high-capacity AirScale products, which enables customers to quickly upgrade to 5G, is growing fast. The company is driving the transition of global enterprises into smart virtual networks by creating a single network for all services, converging mobile and fixed broadband, IP routing and optical networks with the software and services to manage them.NOK’s Zacks Rank & Stock Price PerformanceCurrently, Nokia has a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold).
