ANN ARBOR, Mich., March 18, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- HORIBA, a global leader in measurement and analysis solutions, has received approval from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for its proprietary Infra-Red Laser Absorption Modulation (IRLAM™*1) technology to be used as an accepted alternative for measuring NOx emissions in the certification testing of heavy-duty engines and light-duty vehicles.

HORIBA is a global leader in measurement and analysis solutions

IRLAM represents a significant advancement in infrared gas analysis, incorporating modern sampling techniques and next-generation computational algorithms to provide highly accurate and reliable measurements. This innovation has enabled HORIBA to develop a range of new measurement systems for both laboratory and on-road applications that are precise, resistant to interference, compact, and highly reliable.

"IRLAM was designed to maximize testing flexibility without compromising data quality," said Darren Andrews, Executive Vice President and General Manager at HORIBA. "Our lineup of IRLAM-based products supports improved vehicle environmental performance and helps the automotive industry reduce emissions, even as electrification advances. By 2030, our product roadmap will expand to include additional gas species and applications."

Extensive internal and published testing data has confirmed IRLAM's significant advantages in NOx measurement, offering improved data quality and potential cost savings through enhanced accuracy, superior wet measurement, minimal interference, lower maintenance costs, and consistent response times.

With the EPA's guidance letter now in place, OEMs have formal approval to use HORIBA's IRLAM-based analyzers for NOx measurement in vehicle and engine certification testing, further supporting industry efforts to meet stringent emissions regulations.
