Acting top US envoy says Georgia detention provides chance to resolve visa issues for Koreans

The mass detention of Korean workers in Georgia in a U.S. immigration sweep may provide a fresh opportunity for the two countries to address and clarify the longstanding visa issues for Korea, the acting U.S. envoy to Seoul said Thursday. Joseph Yun, the U.S. charge d'affaires ad interim, made the remarks after more than 300 Korean workers were arrested and detained in a U.S. immigration raid near Savannah over potential violations of visa rules. Following bilateral negotiations, including a visit to Washington by Korea's top diplomat, the two sides agreed to release the workers and allow them to return home on a chartered flight. The unprecedented raid and mass detention of Korean nationals have highlighted loopholes in the U.S. visa system for businesses, at a time when Korean companies are ramping up investment in the world's largest economy and their sole ally. "Visas for people working in the United States are a complicated issue ...
