Philadephia, Pennsylvania — President Lee Jae Myung visited the Hanwha Philly Shipyard in Philadelphia to attend the naming ceremony of the State of Maine, a national security and training vessel commissioned by the U.S. Maritime Administration. The naming ceremony, began at 4 p.m. Tuesday (local time) marks the official christening of a ship and prays for its safe operation. The shipyard is a symbolic site of the South Korea–U.S. shipbuilding cooperation project, known as Make American Shipbuilding Great Again (MASGA), which played a decisive role in finalizing the recent tariff negotiations. Founded in 1801 as a U.S. Navy shipyard and privatized in 1997, the Philadelphia Hanwha Shipyard was acquired by Hanwha Group in December, last year. This marked the first time a South Korean shipbuilding company has taken over a U.S.-based shipyard.
