Sacramento State earns spot on prestigious list of institutions with 'high research activity'
SACRAMENTO, Calif., Feb. 13, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching has recognized Sacramento State for its "high research activity" and number of awarded doctoral degrees by designating the University as a Research 2 (R2) institution.
The announcement marks the first time the University has received the prestigious designation, shared by just 15 other colleges and universities in California, cementing Sac State as a top destination for faculty and students looking to engage in high-quality research and scholarly activity.
Through the millions of dollars awarded annually for research projects and doctoral production, Sac State met the R2 qualifications by spending at least $5 million on research in a year and awarding at least 20 research doctorates. In 2022-23, Sac State spent $28 million on research and awarded 26 research doctorates.
"It's a testament to the exceptional work of our faculty, students, and staff who have taken our research and creative activities to new heights," Sacramento State President Luke Wood said. "Their dedication to engaging in critical research focused on solving real-world problems and to creating new knowledge has transformed our campus into a hub of innovation and discovery."
Even with this designation, Sacramento State will continue focusing on quality teaching and a hands-on approach for educational experiences for faculty and students. It will also open doors to expanded funding opportunities, enhanced industry partnerships and deeper community engagement, said Carlos Nevarez, interim provost and vice president of Academic Affairs
"When our faculty engage in high-level research, it enriches the learning experience for our students – from undergraduates working alongside professors in laboratories to doctoral candidates developing groundbreaking research of their own," Nevarez said. "This synergy between teaching and scholarship creates a dynamic learning environment where students don't just learn about discoveries; they help make them."
Over the years, Sac State has seen tremendous growth and historic milestones reached. Graduation rates have reached over 30% and enrollment numbers have increased by 3.1%.
