For Immediate ReleaseChicago, IL –December 30, 2024 – Zacks Equity Research shares Broadcom Inc. AVGO, as the Bull of the Day and Super Micro Computer, Inc. SMCI, as the Bear of the Day. In addition, Zacks Equity Research provides analysis on Energy Transfer LP ET and ONEOK Inc. OKE.Here is a synopsis of all four stocks:Bull of the Day:Broadcom is one of the unsung heroes of the semiconductor revolution of the past decade. But the stock is up 6X since the 2022 bear market lows and it just jumped over 35% this month after another strong earnings report. And one place the stock is never ignored is Zacks Investment Research. I'm going to highlight recent coverage of this key player in semiconductor networking, from the datacenter to the smartphone.Broadcom reported their Q4 for fiscal 2024 (ended October) on December 12 and gave investors renewed confidence in the wide enterprise demand for their deep solutions stack.Broadcom revenues jumped 51% year-over-year to $14 billion while profits surged 28%. Top-line growth was driven by strong demand for AI semiconductor solutions, custom AI accelerators (XPUs), and VMware cloud networking. My colleague Ethan Feller provided more details here...Broadcom Beats Earnings Estimates as AI Revenue TriplesSince he wrote that article the day after earnings, analysts were once again compelled to raise AVGO earnings estimates for this year and next, making the stock a consistent dweller in the upper realms of the Zacks Rank.Another colleague, Tracey Ryniec who runs the Value Investor and Insider Trader portfolios, bought AVGO shares in September of 2023 near $81. On my last glance at share prices near $240 on Friday, she was sporting a 195% gain for her clients. You can hear Tracy outline the bull case for AVGO and other key Semi players in this October episode of the MarketEdge podcast...Should You Buy Semiconductor Stocks Right Now?Finally, I can do no better to sing the praises of Broadcom than share the excellent views and research of two more colleagues.Dave Bartosiak, manager of the Blockchain Innovators and Surprise Trader portfolios, recently offered this provocative chart video...Is Broadcom a Better Stock to Buy Than NVIDIA?And Andrew Rocco, manager of the Technology Innovators portfolio, wrote a good strategy overview when thinking about the role of semiconductors in any growth-oriented portfolio...The Semiconductor Supercycle: 5 Reasons to Stay BullishIf you can't find reasons to be long-term bullish on AVGO after these strategists explain their views, the Semi/AI trade probably isn't for you.Bear of the Day:Super Micro Computer announced on November 5 only preliminary results for their Q1 fiscal 2025 (ends June) due to investigations into their financial statements. On December 6, Super Micro received a letter from the Nasdaq Stock Market which granted the company’s request for an exception to Nasdaq’s Listing Rule 5250(c)(1) through February 25, 2025.The exception gives the Company until February 25, 2025 to file its Annual Report on Form 10-K for the fiscal year ended June 30, 2024, its Quarterly Report on Form 10-Q for the period ended September 30, 2024 and any other required filings.Given the prelim Q1 results and no guidance from management, analysts were prompted in the past few weeks to lower their EPS estimates for this year and next. While the company shares have been under notable pressure in the second half after the investigations, so far analysts are still maintaining their projections for over 60% topline growth to $24 billion. The primary reason that SMCI fell into the cellar of the Zacks Rank is that since these events, the 2025 EPS consensus fell 7.3% from $3.41 to $3.16. And the fiscal 2026 (starts July) EPS consensus dropped 6.3% to $3.84.These still represent annual growth rates of 43% and 21.5%, respectively, so the growth picture is far from diminished just because the stock has been knocked down to under 1X sales and 10X earnings on the allegations and assignment of independent auditors. While this growth story is also now a value story, investors may want to stay cautious with SMCI shares until there is more visibility into the final reports for fiscal 2024 due in February.Additional content:ET Stock Outperforms its Industry in Six Months: How to PlayUnits of Energy Transfer LP have rallied 23.4% year to date compared with its industry’s growth of 19%. The oil and gas midstream firm owns a wide network of pipelines across the United States and is pursuing opportunities to serve growing power loads from new demand centers across its network.Stay up-to-date with all quarterly releases: See Zacks Earnings CalendarThe firm also exports Liquefied petroleum gas and has natural gas liquids (NGL) export facilities to cater to the rising demand for NGL globally. The ET stock has also outperformed its sector and the S&P 500 in the last six months.Improving unit price cannot be the only reason for adding Energy Transfer to your portfolio. Let us delve deeper and find out factors that can assist investors in deciding whether it is a good entry point or one needs to wait longer for a better entry point into the ET stock.ET Stock’s Widespread Assets & Accretive AcquisitionThe firm is expanding its operations through organic means and accretive acquisitions. It has been making one large accretive acquisition each year since 2021. The WTG acquisition, which closed earlier this year, expanded ET’s natural gas pipeline and processing network in the Permian Basin.Energy Transfer owns more than 130,000 miles of pipelines and related infrastructure spread across 44 states in the United States. Energy Transfer has a well-balanced asset mix that provides strong earnings support. ET’s oil and gas pipelines, gathering and processing, and storage assets are spread in major U.S. basins and growing demand markets. The firm will invest $3-$3.2 billion in 2024 to further expand and strengthen its asset base.Courtesy of its widespread pipelines, the firm is now able to transport nearly 1.85 million barrels of crude oil per day and more than 1.1 million barrels of natural gas liquids per day. As oil and gas production volumes are rising across the United States, ET will have enough producers to utilize its pipelines for transportation.Predominantly Fee-Based ContractsThe majority of Energy Transfer’s revenues are generated from fee-based contracts and are anchored by strong customers. The firm generates nearly 90% of its revenues by charging fees for transportation and storage services it provides to its strong customer base, significantly lowering its commodity price fluctuation risks.Management Ownership in ET RisesET’s management and insiders own a sizeable chunk of its units. Management members and independent board members continue to purchase units of the firm. Energy Transfer insiders bought more than 44 million units worth $468 million since January 2021.Insider ownership in the ET stock is nearly 10%, more than its peers in the same industry. The increasing ownership of insiders indicates bright prospects and sustainable growth amid the rising demand in the midstream space.ET’s Earnings Estimates Moving UpThe Zacks Consensus Estimate for Energy Transfer’s 2024 and 2025 earnings per unit indicates year-over-year growth of 21.1% and 11.7%, respectively. The year-over-year increase in earnings estimates implies analysts’ increasing confidence in the stock.ET’s Units Are Trading at a DiscountEnergy Transfer units are somewhat inexpensive on a relative basis, with its current trailing 12-month Enterprise Value/Earnings before Interest Tax Depreciation and Amortization (EV/EBITDA) being 10.53X compared with the industry average of 12.04X.ONEOK Inc., operating in the same industry, is currently trading at EV/EBITDA TTM of 15.57X, a premium compared to the industry average.ET’s Debt Level Higher Than Industry AverageEnergy Transfer issues debt from time to time to provide liquidity for new capital projects of its subsidiaries, fund acquisitions, or other partnership purposes. The total long-term of the firm as of Sept. 30, 2024, was nearly $59 billion, up from $51.4 billion as of Dec. 31, 2023. The debt to capital of the firm at the end of the third quarter was 56.2%, higher than its industry average of 55.04%.ET Stock’s ROE is Lower Than IndustryEnergy Transfer’s trailing 12-month return on equity is 12.38%, lower than the industry average of 14.84%. Return on equity, a profitability measure, reflects how effectively a company utilizes its shareholders’ funds to generate income. To Sum UpEnergy Transfer has widespread operations across the United States, and expanding operations through acquisitions and organic methods are boosting its performance. The positive factors, like Energy Transfer’s stock trading at a discount and increasing year-over-year earnings estimate, are offset by its return on equity lower than the industry and debt level higher than the industry average. Thus, it is better to adopt a wait-and-see approach on this Zacks Rank #3 (Hold) stock. You can see the complete list of today’s Zacks #1 Rank (Strong Buy) stocks here. Why Haven't You Looked at Zacks' Top Stocks?Since 2000, our top stock-picking strategies have blown away the S&P's +7.0 average gain per year.
