SYRACUSE, N.Y., Feb. 4, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- The Reading League, or TRL, welcomes seven new chapters, expanding the Syracuse-based nonprofit's on-the-ground presence to 39 states and the District of Columbia. The new chapters of The Reading League will operate in Delaware, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Oregon, Tennessee, and Utah.

The addition of these chapters reinforces TRL's efforts to advance the awareness, understanding, and use of evidence-aligned reading instruction, which is gaining wide acceptance across the United States. To date, 80% of states and the District of Columbia have passed laws or implemented new policies on evidence-based reading instruction grounded in the science of reading, a vast, interdisciplinary body of research about reading and issues related to reading and writing.

President and Chief Executive Officer Dr. Maria Murray welcomes the new chapters and encourages them to continue increasing awareness of the science of reading in their communities.

"Just a few years ago, we piloted a three-state chapter program to determine if that would be a sustainable approach for growth, and it was a resounding success," Dr. Murray said. "The work and passion of volunteer chapter leaders often represent the first impression of The Reading League to educators. We appreciate their work and support their growth and impact in their states."

Chapters support The Reading League's mission and values and offer a variety of educational events and opportunities, allowing stakeholders to participate in the mission as well.

Andrea Setmeyer, national chapter director of The Reading League, is humbled by the rapid chapter growth and strong volunteer leadership.

"I am amazed when I look at our map and see 40 chapters across the country, all working together to advance our shared mission," Setmeyer said. "The best part of my job is getting to know our 360 volunteer chapter board members. It is inspiring to witness their passion, ideas, and commitment to bring the science of reading to their communities."
