Poster to be presented at AAAAI Annual Meeting demonstrates 91% clinical success with OIT

SAN DIEGO, Feb. 27, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Latitude Food Allergy Care, the leading network of food allergy clinics in the United States, today announced findings of a study led by Weill Cornell Medicine of over 1,000 patients using oral immunotherapy (OIT) to treat food allergies, with 91% of patients reaching maintenance phase when treated in a clinical setting. The findings will be presented at the upcoming American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology (AAAAI) Annual Meeting.

The study suggests that OIT may be safely and effectively implemented in clinical practice settings, potentially addressing a critical gap in food allergy treatment research that has historically focused on controlled clinical trials.

"These findings are significant because they reflect real-world clinical practice outcomes rather than controlled research settings," said Zahida "Rani" Maskatia, MD, FACAAI. "The high success rate and safety profile we observed may provide reassurance to both healthcare providers and families considering OIT as a potential treatment option to treat food allergies."

Key findings from the study include:

  • 91% of patients reached maintenance for at least one food.
  • 63% of patients had at least one reaction, 61% had a mild reaction, 23% had a moderate reaction, and 12.7% had a severe reaction.
  • Frequency of reaction was 5% of all doses administered, where 4.4% were mild.
  • The most common symptoms were pruritis (36%), mild abdominal pain (34%), and emesis or diarrhea (22%).
  • More patients had reactions to milk and egg, than sesame, tree nut, and peanut
  • Lower respiratory comorbidity (p=0.002) and age of OIT onset (p<0.05) were associated with increased OIT reactions.
